2020 Thunder Volleyball Season Preview

Manhattan, KS - The 2020 season is underway! The Thunder Volleyball team has been practicing for three weeks now and are anxiously awaiting their first match next week. "We are so blessed to have the opportunity to practice and compete this season. It is not lost on us that we are in a unique position and I have been very pleased with the commitment and effort of the team to stay healthy and compete this season. " said Coach Sanders.

This years team is made of 1 senior, 3 juniors, 2 sophomores, 1 red-shirt freshman and 5 freshman. The team showed up in great shape and ready to work on August 13th. This years captains and two key players are senior middle/right side hittter Kennedy Wilson and junior outside hitter Grace Marozas, both return this season as strong contributors both on offense and defense. Coach Sanders said, "Grace and Kennedy are hard workers and are always encouraging to the team. We will really look to both of them to push the team and provide leadership on and off the court."

Two new key players include junior Katelynn Halstead, a transfer from Central Community College in Nebraska, and Roni Harris of Fort Worth, TX. Halstead has jumped right into a starting outside hitter position and she bring experience and leadership after losing two senior outside hitters from last years team. Harris, originally came as an outside hitter, but has emerged as strong defensive player and is currently playing libero. Both are contributing across the board with strong serves, aggressive defense and explosive offense.

Sophomore middle hitter Brenna Flax and red-shirt freshman Grace Holcomb are expected to be our middle hitters. Flax had an outstanding freshman season and is continuing to grow into an offensive threat. Holcomb missed last season due to injury, but has worked her way back into the rotation and we are excited about her potential as a middle.

Sophomore Elise Corbett, returns as the setter, after working her way into the starting line-up at the end of the 2019 season. Corbett has been working on leading the offense and running smart plays. She has made tremendous strides over the past year.

Junior right side Grace Kuenzi is playing some of the best volleyball we have seen her play. Being a left handed right side hitter, gives her a little bit of an edge and her swing is hard to defend.

Other freshman include defensive specialist Dani Sinclair, setter Alayna Johnson, defensive specialist Addison Matlack and utility player Kylie Walters. Each have tremendous potential and have been working hard on the transition to the college game. They each come with a lot of volleyball experience and volleyball IQ which helps them to transition quicker. They have good energy! Expect to see all of them on the court at some point this year.

"I am so excited for this team to start matches next week. We are so talented across the board, have excellent energy and chemistry that came very quickly. They are a fun group to watch! We have full expectations that this team will be successful on and off the court this season. Our goal is Nationals, and we are committed to doing what it takes to get there!" said Coach Sanders.

Matches begin Tuesday, September 8 at Kansas Christian College and the first home matches are Saturday, September 12 against Oak Hills Christian College and Spurgeon College. Check out the website for the full schedule.
