Volleyball Splits Weekend NAIA Matches

Manhattan, KS - MCC hosted two NAIA teams this past weekend and it was an exciting day of volleyball. First up was the Cottey College Comets from Nevada, MO. The Lady Thunder came out strong and firing on all cylinders controlling most of the match. MCC would sweep the Comets with scores of 25-18, 25-9, 25-19. The team had 41 kills with only 13 errors for a percentage of .275 and held Cottey to a .000 kill percentage. The Thunder defense was unstoppable with 56 digs and 4 blocks. Junior outside hitter Grace Marozas led the offense with 10 kills. Freshman libero was all over court, picking up 16 digs. Sophomore setter Elise Corbett would set a season high 36 assists. The team had a season high 9 block in the match. 

The Lady Thunder's second match of the day would bring Sterling College from Sterling, KS. Sterling's offense was faster and stronger than what the Thunder had been playing against, however the team responded well and fought to the end. There were many long rallies and exciting plays, but Sterling would pull out the win 18-25, 16-25 and. 20-25. Sophomore Brenna. Flax would lead the team in kills with 6.  Junior outside hitter was strong on defense with 12 digs. Sophomore setter, Elise Corbett would tally 20 assists. 

"Overall, this was great day of volleyball. We had two competitive opponents and the team really stepped up their level of play and rose to the challenge. The win over Cottey was a solid and exciting win and we responded well to a lot of what Sterling was throwing at us. I was really proud of how the team stuck together and never quit." said Coach Sanders.

Next up for the Lady Thunder will be a double header versus Midwest Christian College Conference opponent Barclay College on Saturday, October 10th at 2:00 and 4:00 in the Howie's Activity Center.
