Spikefest Tournament

Ankeny, IA - The Lady Thunder competed in the annual Spikefest Tournament hosted by Faith Baptist Bible College this weekend. The tournament began with NAIA opponent Cottey College. The Thunder started out slow, dropping the first two sets of the match 17-25, 14-25. However, in exciting and intense action, MCC rallied together and pulled off wins in the third and fourth set with scores of 25-22 and 27-25. The fifth set brought great volleyball on both sides of the net, with back and forth rallies! Cottey pulled ahead at the end, and with couple of untimely errors by MCC, the Thunder dropped the 5th set 13-15.

The second match of pool play brought the host school Faith Baptist Bible College. MCC controlled the match and defeated Faith in 3 straight sets, 25-17, 25-22 and 25-21.

Saturday morning, MCC continued pool play with a solid match against Trinity BIble College. Again, the Thunder were able to control the match and win in three straight sets, 25-12, 25-12 and 25-9. The Thunder offense  and serving were very tough and Trinity had no return.

After 2nd place in their pool, the Thunder would advance to playoffs to play the 2nd place team of the other pool. This match brought a NCCAA Southwest Region opponent, Randall University. The team struggled to get going after a long break and could not pull together enough offense to match the strong offense of Randall. Randall took the match 15-25, 18-25 and 23-25.

MCC finished in 4th place, which is the highest finish at the Spikefest Tournament in 3 seasons.

Key players for the weekend were senior libero, Mary Frances McNellis, who finished with 93 digs, 7 aces, 4 kills and 12 assists. McNellis was also named to the Spikefest All-Tournament Team. Junior outside hitter Karly GIbbs finished the weekend with 44 kills, 4 aces, 55 digs and 1 solo block.
