Lady Thunder Win on Senior Night

Manhattan, KS - The Lady Thunder cruised to a 3-0 win over Calvary University tonight! Even after a slow start, the Thunder were able to control the match and win 25-17, 25-13, 25-19. A new addition to the roster is Kennedy Wilson, filling in for the injured Grace Kuenzi.

"This was great match for us to get Kennedy on the court and back into the swing of volleyball! We are excited to have her to try to keep our rotation as normal as posible! She works really hard and will be an excellent addition to the team," said Coach Sanders.

The team also honored our two seniors tonight, Brooklyn Sherman and Mary Frances McNellis.

Brooklyn Sherman has been a four-year starter at MCC and has worked incredibly hard over her career to become one of our most improved players. From a quiet and shy freshman who never wanted the ball to a captain and team leader her senior year.

She has currently played in 311 sets and has 321 kills, 28 aces, 136 digs and 21 blocks. This season she had a career high match against Barclay College. She finished with 12 kills, 3 aces, 6 digs and 3 blocks.

Off the court, Brooklyn is pursuing a degree in counseling with tracks in family and social justice at MCC. She has been a Resident Assistant for the last two years, is a member of Student Government as the Student Body Treasurers. She has also been a member of camp teams and MCC and led missions’ trips to Mexico. She also currently volunteers at Life Choice Ministries.  After she graduates she plans to pursue a career as a high school counselor.

Brooklyn’s sweet spirit and humor have added so much to our team! She is our “team mom”  and was given as the Servant’s Heart Award from her teammates twice. Thank you Brooklyn for your leadership on and off the court!

Mary Frances McNellis has been a setter and libero in her career and has been a leader since she entered the program. She has played in 321 sets 1186 digs and 1444 assists. She currently ranks at #6 for total digs with 1186, #7 for digs per game with 3.69 and #3 for total assists with 1444 and #3 for assists per game with 4.49/game in MCC history.

Mary Frances has been awarded 2ndTeam All Conference once, 1stTeam All Conference twice, 2ndTeam All Region twice and All-Tournament team this season at the Spikefest Tournament.

Mary Frances has been a captain for two seasons and has been an incredible leader for our team. We asked her to selflessly change her position in the middle of her junior season and she did not hesitate and has owned the position and is currently the #2 ranked libero in the NCCAA.

Off the court, Mary Frances has been involved on campus as an RA, a member of the Student Spiritual Life Committee; camp teams and is currently the Student Body Secretary. She is pursuing a degree in Bible and Leadership at MCC and Kinesiology and K State. After graduation, she plans to pursue a career in Personal training and coaching as well as marry Russell Wilson.

Mary Frances leadership and goofiness will be greatly missed in our program. She has always been willing to do whatever it takes to make the team and herself better. Her love for the Lord is so evident and her spiritual leadership has made such an impact on everyone in the program. Thank you Mary Frances for all you have done for MCC Volleyball.
