Thunder Lose to Bethany College in a Tale of Two Halves

Manhattan, KS

Lady Thunder Soccer team continues it's steady improvement against the Bethany College Swedes.  Although the socre line (8-0) doesn't necessarily show it, the Thunder are continuing to get better and gain confidence in themselves.  The game started much like the previous 3 with the Swedes scoring in the first two minutes of the game.  "This is something that has happend this season.  We are down early before the game even really gets started.  It forces us to play catch up right away, and put us in a defensive mindset to not let the score get out of hand."  said Coach Jagerson.  "We are going to set a goal this week, to prevent that over the next few games"  This first half ended with Bethany up 6-0.

In the 2nd half, the Thunder tightened up, and kept Bethany socreless for over 18 minutes with some excellent defensive play by Ashlyn Stoll, Caitlyn Cogswell, Heather Larvick and Davinna Farney, the back four for the Thunder along with GK Christonit Carpenter who made a couple of key saves.  In addition, MCC managed to get the ball up the field and create a couple of scoring chances including an excellent opportunity by Moncia Garcia which forced the Swedes Keeper to make a save.  "We put a goal in place at halftime to not allow a goal for 10 mintutes of the 2nd half.  They not only achieved it, but surpassed it by 8 minutes.  This shows how much we are improving and how capable we are of playing with these teams. We still have to keep getting better, but we are slowly starting to believe that we can.  That is the first step."  said Jagerson

The Thunder travel to Hannibal-Lagrange University Thursday to take on the Trojans in a non-league game.  The Trojans are 1-3 on the season and will pose a good challenge for MCC.  "HLGU is a team much like ourselves with low numbers and in process of rebuilding their program.  They have the ability to shoot, but have given up several goals this season.  I think that if we can come out and play them the same way that we played the 2nd half, we will give them everything they can handle."
