Thunder Shutout Nebraska Christian 2-0 for First Victory of the Season

Manhattan, KS

The hard work has paid off.  Lady Thunder Soccer after enduring a tough schedule to start the season, got a chance to play another NCCAA opponent, Nebraska Christian College.  MCC decided to employ a 4-3-3 formation to attack the Sentinels and try and score an early goal.  Although the Thunder managed to take several shots in the first half, none were able to find the back of the net as the Sentinels goalkeeeper kept the game scoreless in the first half.

"We decided to go ahead and change up the formation and attack rather than defend in this game.  We had some chances to score, but our finishing wasn't quite good enough and NCC goalkeeper was good.  She was not going to let in any easy goals."  said Coach Jagerson.

MCC's Christoni Carpenter, and the rest of the Thunder defense were not to be outdone.  Not only did they hold the Nebraska Christian scoreless the entire game, they only allowed 9 shots on goal.  "I am very happy with the way the defense back four of Heather Larvick, Hailey Wright, Sarah Ward and Davinna Farney played today.  They helped make it so our midfield didn't have to push back so far and they could concentrate on getting the ball upfield."  stated Jagerson.

In the second half, the Thunder contiuned thier onslaught on the Sentinels keeper taking another 13 shots on goal.  MCC totaled 22 shots for the game. The breakthrough finally came in the 84th minute when Veronica Hernandez got a breakaway and placed the ball just over Sentinel's keeper' head.  "It was an excellent shot, Veronica had a couple of other chances where she shot the ball low and the keeper saved it.  This time she sent the ball high and the kepper had no chance."  said Jagerson.

It wasn't over though. About a minute later with Nebraska Christian pushing for the equalizer, NCC forward Chole Herrera let go a shot right past Carpenter that hit off the post and Carpenter had to knock the ball out of bounds to save it.  The ensuing corner allowed Herrera to get another shot on goal, but once again saved by Carpenter perserving the shutout.  After that, the Thunder decided to go on the attack.  Approaching the 90th minute Hernandez fired a beautiful ground pass to an open Caitlyn Cogswell, who placed the shot in the lower right corner, sealing the victory for the Thunder.

"I couldn't be more proud of this team.  We have endured a ton of obstacles this season and they just keep going.  We had a good week of practice this week and it showed. They earned this win."

MCC is in action again on Wednesday against NAIA opponent Harris Stowe State University (2-6), in St. Louis.

"Just another opportunity for us to continue to improve and get ready for our division opponents"
