MCC Men Fall in Conference Championship Game

Belton, MO - The MCC men's basketball fell just short in their bid to win the Midwest Christian College Conference Tournament, falling in the Championship Game to top-seeded Ozark Christian College, 78-77. 

MCC opened the tournament with a 74-56 win over Emmaus Bible College. In that game MCC jumped out to a 44-31 halftime lead and from there they were able to hold on to the victory. Chelvin Webb led MCC with 19 points, Gabe Awbrey had 18 points and Nate Awbrey finished with 13 points and 12 rebounds.

In the semi-final round MCC faced off against the host school and second seeded, Calvary University. The Thunder played another solid first half and entered the break with a 41-25 lead. MCC would push their lead out to as many as nineteen points at 50-31. However from there the Warriors came alive and went on a 25-5 run to take the lead at 56-55. For the remainder of the game neither team was able gain more than a five point advantage. Inside the final thirty seconds with the score tied at 73, MCC had the ball and Gabe Awbrey was able to knock down a three-pointer with seven seconds left to give MCC the lead. MCC was able to force a turnover on Calvary's final possesion and two free throws accounted for the final margin as MCC won 78-73. Webb again led the way for MCC with 23 points and 9 rebounds, Gabe Awbrey had 22 points and both Nate Awbrey and Alex Mitura scored 10 for MCC. In addition this victory gave Head Coach Shawn Condra his 500th career victory at MCC.

Saturday's championship game saw two teams who had split their earlier season meetings with each winning on the others home court. MCC again played well in the first half and led 39-33 at the break behind the hot shooting of Gabe Awbrey who connect on five three-pointers. In the second half MCC led for most of the way however Ozark would continue to close the gap and as the game entered the final minutes it was a one possession game. With under a minute to play Ozark to a one point lead and MCC missed their next shot and was force to foul. Ozark split the free throws and led 76-74 with under 25 seconds to play. On MCC's ensuing possession Gabe Awbrey connected on a three-pointer from almost the exact spot he had won the game th night before to give MCC the 77-76 lead. However Ozark still had time and they drew a foul an hit both free throws with 6.4 seconds left to go up 78-77. MCC had one last chance and but the last shot rolled off the rim and allowed Ozark to hold on for the victory. Gabe Awbrey led MCC with 25 points and 9 rebounds. Alex Mitura had 16 points, while Nate Awbrey had 14 points and Jordon Davis came off the bench with 11 points. Gabe Awbrey was named 1st Team All-Conference, Chelvin Webb was named 2nd Team All-Conference and Alex Mitura was named Honorable Mention All-Conference.

MCC now heads to the Southwest Region Tournament in Arlingtion, Texas. The Thunder are the #4 seed and will open play February 21 at 5pm against the #5 seed, Dallas Christian College.
