Men Edge Past Ozark on the Road

Joplin, MO - The men's basketball team went on the road on Friday and came away with a 73-72 victory over Ozark Christian College. Both teams started off strong on the offensive end throughout a tight first half. The score was tied seven times and the lead changed hands four times, one of the ties was at halftime that saw the score knotted up at 34. Nate Awbrey and Alex Mitura led the way for MCC in the opening half as each player scored 9 points. 

The second half saw the Ambassadors score the first seven points to take their largest lead of the game. MCC was able to respond quickly with a run of their own to retake the lead at 44-42. Over the next few minutes the score stayed closed until MCC was able to open up their largest lead at 59-51 with just over seven minutes remaining. Ozark responded well to MCC and closed the gap quickly heading into the final minutes. Ozark retook the lead late on a three-pointer at 68-67, Gabe Awbrey responded for MCC with a three to give the Thunder a 70-68 lead. After Ozark tied the score at 70 Nate Awbrey gave MCC the lead at 72-70 with forty-three seconds left. An MCC foul allowed Ozark to shoot free-throws and tie the score, on MCC's ensuing possession Chelvin Webb missed a short runner and Ozark gathered the rebound with 22 seconds remaining. Following a timeout Ozark had an opportunity for the last shot but Webb came up with a steal and was fouled with 2 seconds remaining. Webb hit his first free-throw but missed the second, so Ozark had one last chance to take the lead. Following their last timeout they missed a desparation three which allowed MCC to hold on for the win. 

Nate Awbrey led the way for MCC with 22 points, Webb had 19 points and Gabe Awbrey had 14 points and 15 rebounds. "I was very pleased that the guys were able to make some plays late to get the win. I don't think we played our best game but Ozark is a difficult matchup with their size inside, so coming away with a road win is nice," commented Coach Condra.

MCC will be back in action Tuesday at home against Barclay College at 7pm.
