MCC Falls in OT to Southwestern

Manhattan, KS - The men's basketball team fell short in their bid to knock off Southwestern College, losing 107-98 in overtime.  Southwestern entered the contest at 4-1 and averaging over 105 points per game and their four victories had all been by over 25 points.  However MCC came out ready to play as Will Chisam started off strong scoring six early points to give the Thunder a slight advantage.  Southwestern was up to the task and led by standout Cameron Clark, who became Southwestern's All-Time leading scorer last night, the Moundbuilders were able to hang tight with MCC.  Michael White and Nick Babalola came off the bench to give MCC a spark in the first half scoring 10 and 9 points respectively.  Southwestern took a 40-35 lead with about six minutes to go in the first half but MCC responded with an 11-0 run, keyed by two Dalton Miller three-pointers and from there MCC took the lead into halftime at 55-52.

In the second half MCC was able to maintain their slight lead for about the first six minutes of the second half.  With MCC leading 64-63 the Thunder went on a 13-2 run to gain their largest advantage of the evening at 77-65 with just under ten minutes left to play.  Southwestern responded again and went on a 15-3 run to knot the score at 80 with just over six minutes to play.  Down the strecth neither team held a lead of larger than three points.  With the score tied at 94 K.J. Dobbins nailed a three pointer to give MCC the lead with just over a minute to play, but Southwestern's Brian Lipsey hit a three-pointer to tie the score at 97.  MCC got one last look by Miller but the shot fell short and sent the game to overtime.

Overtime saw Southwestern get off to strong start and MCC wasn't able to respond this time, scoring only one point in the five minute overtime period.  "While we are never happy to lose, we were pleased with how we competed with a quality opponent.  We had several guys step up and make big plays, but we just fell short in finishing.  Hopefully this will build the confidence in our guys moving forward," commented Head Coach Shawn Condra.

The team will be back in action this weekend as they head to McPherson to take part in the Central Christian Classic where they will take on Oklahoma Wesleyan Unviversity on Friday and Grace University on Saturday.
