Thunder Baseball Improves, but loses in 3 game series

This weeked Thunder Baseball traveled to Marshall, Texas for a 3 game series vs Southwest Assemblies of God University and Wiley College.  On Friday, the Thunder played SAGU and Wiley College.  In the first game against SAGU,  MCC was shut out 15-0.  Thunder managed only 1 hit by catcher Caleb McDonald.

In the 2nd game against Wiley College, MCC lost 14-3.  The Thunder managed to grab its first lead of the season in the top of the 3rd inning when James Wyman single to left scoring Conor O'Boyle and Larry Santos.  MCC led 3-2 until the bottom of the 5th when Willey College exploded for 9 runs.  "We didn't play very well the first game, but we had a talk and came back strong in the 2nd game getting out to an early lead."  said head coach Chad Jagerson.  "We just weren't able to finish them off.  We had several other chances to score runs, but just could seem to get the clutch hit."

In the 3rd game, MCC got off to another early lead when they started off the game with 2 straight walks from Caleb Schuckman and Dalten Blake.  Wyman came up an singled home Blake for a 1-0 lead.  It was short-lived however when Wiley College put 3 runs up in the bottom of the first.  However for the first time this season, the Thunder came back and tied the game in the top of the 2nd when Mario Cabrera was hit by a pitch and O'Boyle tripled to right scoring Cabrera.  O'Boyle later scored to tie the game at 3-3 when Dalten Blake singled.  Wiley College managed to stretch their lead to 7-3 going into the bottom of the 5th. Then things got out of hand in the 5th, when Wiley College bats came alive scoring 14 runs on 7 hits to end the chance of any comeback.  The final score was 21-3.

"I thought that we made huge strides in some areas this weekend and took a few steps backwards in others."  said Jagerson. "We need to be able to make the rountine plays and not give them outs.  We comitted way too many errors this weekend and gave up way too many walks.  That is not a good recipe for a team to win games. I thought our hitting was better, and we even were able to score a few runs.  We still need to cut down on our strikeouts at the plate.  Especially with runners on base."

"We are still a young team who has a ton of potential and we are just figuring out what a team looks like.  We have to trust the process and be paitent.  We have to keep from giving up the big inning.  In the last 4 games, we havent't been able to do that. We need to learn to play and function as one team, but it doesn't happen overnight."

Thunder baseball will have its home opener next Tuesday against Tabor college at 3pm at the Bettis Sports Complex in Topeka, KS.
